Boat Registrations Jump 32 Percent

Preliminary data representing about half the U.S. boat market reflects the continuing trend of people taking to the water as pandemic restrictions ease.

Registrations increased 31.8 percent year-over-year in the main powerboat categories, and were up 5.9 percent year-to-date in those segments, according to data from Statistical Surveys. The numbers show that the industry has largely recouped sales lost in spring during widespread lockdowns.

“We’ve been seeing this through the monthly data; we’re seeing an increase in demand,” SSI Sales Director Ryan Kloppe told Trade Only Today. “People have been stuck inside and finding ways to get out. We track recreational industries, and whether it’s RV, powersports or marine, it’s all up this summer.”
