Cummins to Debut Cleaner, Single-Stage Diesel Emissions Module

Cummins Emission Solutions, a subsidiary of Cummins Inc., is introducing the first of its ultra-high efficiency aftertreatment systems, the EcoFit Single Module, according to a news release.

The unit, which works in combination with a fuel additive to remove nitrogen oxide and particulate matter from diesel engine exhaust, will be available to OEM and aftermarket for application on Cummins’ medium and heavy-duty diesel engines, a range that would include many Cummins diesel motorhome engines, according to Cummins Director of External Communications Jon Mills.

Cummins will debut the Single Fit at the Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. on March 26.

“We are very proud to announce this groundbreaking platform and believe it is a game changer in the commercial vehicle aftertreatment market,” said John Carroll, General Manager – Global On-Highway Business. “This product uses innovations in catalyst and urea dosing technologies unique to Cummins Emissions Solutions to deliver an ideal solution in the market.”

A similar treatment module was previously available in a two-stage model. Mills said the EcoFit Single not only reduces size and weight, but aligns engines with 2017 Environmental Protection Agency Greenhouse Gas Emissions standards.

The module is up to 60 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the two-stage model, which conformed to 2013 EPA standards. The smaller unit enables better heat management and retention for improved fuel economy capability, while the simple single-pass exhaust flow design delivers low backpressure, meeting the needs of end-user customers, according to the release.

“We’ve achieved incredible results with this product through an entirely new engineering approach to aftertreatment systems,” Carroll said. “Historically, aftertreatment systems have been designed to meet emissions requirements; however, we’ve approached the development of this system to meet our customer needs first, while also meeting emissions standards and maintaining product integrity. We designed a product that will not only meet, but also exceed customer expectations.”

Unlike the previous system, the UL2, the single module does not require engine coolant lines to and from the diesel exhaust fluid injector. Operators will see more efficient atomization of urea and minimized urea deposits, thus requiring fewer regeneration events while experiencing the optimal use of DEF throughout the system.
