Report: Elkhart County’s Unemployment Rate Rises

Unemployment form

Unemployment in Elkhart County, Ind., rose to 1.6 percent in January, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Tuesday, higher than the previous month but still near historic lows.

In the Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area, 1,310 more people were working in January compared with the previous month, but the labor force grew by 2,012 workers, the report said.

The agency estimated 1,842 workers were unemployed, up from 1,140 the previous month.

The previous month’s rate was 1 percent, adjusted upward from 0.9 percent, the lowest rate anywhere in the nation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

The county’s January rate this year of 1.6 percent is well below the benchmark rate of 3.8 percent recorded in January 2021.

It remains the lowest rate among the 13 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in Indiana.
