The frustrated owner of a Kamloops, British Columbia, car dealership is warning other small business owners after a series of theft and vandalism incidents.
This story by Dylana Kneeshaw originally appeared in CFJC Today.
Steve Smith owns Automotion Motors and RV in the Dallas neighborhood of Kamloops. Smith said a vehicle on his lot was recently vandalized. Smith said whoever was involved had tried to jack it up, then steal it, but were unable to and left the vehicle’s ignition damaged.
After the incident was called in to local authorities, Smith said he had hoped officers would be able to catch the culprits, but the vehicle’s tires were stolen the following evening.
“It’s frustrating because we pay taxes out here, the same as everybody else, we could use some surveillance out here. We’re just a small place, to keep getting hit all the time,” he said, noting how several months ago they were victims of another theft. “They’ve driven through our wall, they’re stealing tires and fuel, they’ve stolen starters off of vehicles – it’s just continuous.”
Smith said he’s spoken with other small business owners who have recently dealt with theft or vandalism, and wonders what else can be done to prevent and deter future crimes.
Kamloops police added that quality surveillance equipment can be helpful with investigations, and small business owners looking for more theft prevention tips can get in touch with police at (250) 828-3000.
