Hospitalizations from COVID-19 in Indiana’s St. Joseph County and surrounding areas have climbed back to their highest numbers in almost three months, offering the latest evidence of the Delta variant’s local spread among unvaccinated people.
The seven-county district that includes St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall counties started this week with 81 people in the hospital with Covid, the greatest number since May 22, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.
Beacon Health System reported 42 people being treated for Covid at its hospitals in South Bend, Elkhart and Bremen as of Monday, including five people on ventilators and one pediatric case. Twenty-three of those patients were at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
For the month of August, the 58 COVID-19 hospital admissions in St. Joseph County through Monday were more than the county saw the entire month of June or July, according to state data.
