The end of the work week is bringing about a new task for Uriel Moreno in Elkhart, Ind.
This story by Kim Shine originally appeared in WNDU News 16.
“Kind of blindsided but, honestly, we had no idea until the very morning and they were like, ‘Hey, there’s a layoff,” Moreno said.
The 24-year-old said he’s now looking for a new job after being let go from the Jayco RV plant in Middlebury.
“We worked through the day, and around 12:30 p.m., around lunch is when I started seeing group leaders walking up to people handing them their checks,” he said.
Moreno says he was told 30 percent of plant crew was cut.
At this point, a Jayco representative told NewsCenter 16 the company has “no comment.”
“(Group leaders) said, ‘Well, we’re not really getting orders like we have to. We have to cut people. Save some costs,’” Moreno added.
The potential layoffs come as Elkhart County’s unemployment rate is at its highest since June 2016. Unemployment figures put the January 2019 rate at 3.7 percent, up from 2.5 percent in January 2018.
