Indianapolis-based Jefferson Electric is launching a new division focused on providing more options for people to go solar, according to report in Inside Indiana Business. The company says Jefferson Electric Off-Grid will design and install off-grid solar systems for homes, RVs and agricultural settings.

The new division was formed in response to legislation passed in 2017 that reduced the compensation that solar owners received through net metering.

Net metering allows solar owners to sell the excess electricity generated from their solar panels back to the utilities.

“Within our state, customers have limited ability to choose where their energy is being produced, and thus, no way to contribute to the renewable energy job market, or to reduce the environmental consequences being affected by legislation and public utility companies,” said Kendall Ludwig, director of off-grid for Jefferson Electric.

The company says the new division will also include its first DIY solar retail space for individuals looking to install their own solar system.
