Recreational marine expenditures reached $49.4 billion in 2020 – a record year for the boating industry.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association announced that its Total Industry Sales by Category & State section of the 2020 U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract is available at nmma.org.
According to NMMA, recreational marine expenditures reached $49.4 billion in 2020 – a record year for the boating industry as Americans spent more time on the water during the coronavirus pandemic. Total sales were up 14.2 percent from 2019.
Other highlights of the report include:
- Florida led the U.S. in marine expenditures – boaters there spent $4.3 billion on new powerboats, engines, trailers and aftermarket accessories in 2020. Texas, Michigan, North Carolina and Minnesota made up the top five marine-sales states.
- In 2020, estimated recreational boat sales totaled 318,550 units, an increase of 12.5 percent compared to 2019, and the highest number of unit sales since 2008.
- Retail unit sales of new powerboats were led by outboard boats (up 14 percent), personal watercraft (up 8.3 percent) and wake-sports boats (up 21.4 percent).
