NuWa Industries to Cease Production, Considering Closure

NuWa Industries
Chanute, Kan.-based NuWa Industries may close for good after a planned production stoppage in December. CEO Michael S. Mitchell of NuWa posted a letter on the manufacturer’s website that said NuWa “cannot generate enough new unit sales to support efficient or breakeven production.”

NuWa will accept build orders until Sept. 15 and fill orders through Christmas, Mitchell wrote. He could not be reached for comment by RV PRO.

“Whether this termination of production is temporary or permanent, I do not yet know,” he said in the letter. “This decision goes against management’s desire to retain jobs for our dedicated employees and our community, but shareholders cannot continue to fund the production inefficiencies.”

Mitchell said there is a possibility NuWa's HitchHiker line could be produced by another manufacturer.

“We continue to explore having limited HitchHiker models produced to our specifications by another high-end manufacturer,” he wrote. “But if you want a new HitchHiker built exactly to your specifications, that order needs to be in place quickly or we will respectfully not accept it. We will accept orders only as long as we feel they can be completed by Christmas or before, and our present lead time is running 12 weeks.”

Several NuWa dealers interviewed for this story said they were unaware of Mitchell’s online letter.

What's with the closing of all these high end 5th wheel manufacturers?? First Carriage, now NuWa, & I believe Newmar is getting out of the 5th wheel business as well.. (to concentrate on their motor coaches instead).

However there are now 2 start-up companies vying for a spot in the high end 5er market.. Redwood (by Thor) & Lifestyles (by Evergreen) What's up with this?? I feel there should have been no need to close down production.. I feel there needed to be some house cleaning done in house @ these failed companies.. Everyone has the same old floorplans... same cheap vernier cabinets, linoleum floors..

The industry needs a breath of fresh air... We have modern materials.. why are we still using the same old stuff 30 yrs. later. when we have Kevlar, & epoxies that'll stop a bullet. LED lighting, powder coating.. The engineers & designers need to come up with some new & exciting plans.. materials, STRONG frames & axles! (Redwood came out with a forward living room floor plan that is flying out the door as fast as they can build them).

I know I am going to be getting my dream 5th wheel soon.. (As soon as I figure out who is not going bankrupt in the high end 5er market). DRV has my vote now unless someone else comes along and tells me they are going out of business too?
