Elkhart County Foundation Surpasses $500M in Assets

The Community Foundation of Elkhart County has reached a historic milestone, reporting $502 million in total assets at the close of its most recent fiscal year, according to a press release.

With this achievement, the Community Foundation now stands among the top 200 foundations in the world and the top 50 community foundations in the United States.

“This moment is really a testament to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of those who serve here,” said Pete McCown, president of the Community Foundation. “We are where we are today because people in Elkhart County believe in giving back to their community. That generosity, combined with the work of our staff and volunteers, has built something extraordinary.”

McCown noted that reaching this level of assets reflects more than just numbers on a balance sheet. “The $502 million is about our generous donors. But they wouldn’t choose to be generous if we weren’t fulfilling a mission that makes Elkhart County stronger,” he said. “It’s an indicator that we’ve done our work and assembled a remarkable team of people.”

Carrie Berghoff, chief development officer, expressed gratitude to staff and partners for their commitment. “We wouldn’t reach this milestone without each and every one of you,” she said. “You live out our values every day, and this achievement reflects your dedication to the community.”

Board chairman Dave Weaver reflected on this milestone. “It’s been one of the great joys of my life to serve on the board of the Community Foundation,” he said. “To see us grow, challenge each other, and support this community has been remarkable. I’m confident that with this team and these resources, the best years are ahead.”

Founded in 1989, the Community Foundation of Elkhart County works to inspire generosity, strengthen community and help people make a meaningful difference. Through the support of thousands of donors and community partners, the Community Foundation invests in education, families and quality of place across Elkhart County.
