Community: Campground Opens to Wildfire Victims
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will open a campground at Lake Mendocino in California for up to 70 temporary housing units to accommodate those displaced by October’s devastating wildfires.
This story appeared in the Ukiah Daily Journal.
In response to a request from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Mendocino County, approximately 75 acres at Lake Mendocino’s Kyen Campground will be used to provide space for up to 70 RVs to temporarily house people left homeless by the fires.
The Kyen Campground has been determined to contain feasible sites and is close to the homes of many county residents who have been displaced by the fires. Lake Mendocino will remain open and operating normally while the temporary housing is in place.
The RVs will be installed in phases beginning in early December.
Lake Mendocino, formed with the construction of the Coyote Valley Dam in 1958, is the largest reservoir in Mendocino County. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood risk reduction, water resource management and recreational opportunities to improve the quality of life for the public.
