Police Dig Through Forest River Fire Remains

Heavy equipment will be moved in the next week to remove the roof and other heavy material at the charred remains of a Forest River RV plant on the east side of Elkhart, Ind.

This story originally appeared in the South Bend Tribune.

The work is necessary to make the site safe for investigators from the fire department, the state fire marshal, Elkhart police and a private fire investigator hired by the insurance company.

The plant, which is located at 411 County Road 15, was declared a total loss following the March 12 fire. No one was seriously injured.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.

“Nothing has been ruled out so we’re looking at every possibility,” said Aaron Gerber, division chief for fire prevention.

The factory produced Vibe and Vibe Extreme towable RVs. Forest River is the second largest RV manufacturer in the nation.
