After 44 years with Airstream, Parts and Service General Manager Dave Schumann is retiring, according to a news release issued Tuesday.
Rick March Sr., a 28-year factory veteran, will take over Schumann’s position.
Schumann oversaw the factory and customer service and parts sales for the past 14 years. Before that, he was responsible for quality control and auditing procedures for trailer and touring coach production as quality assurance manager.
“Dave has been a huge asset to Airstream throughout his career; he immersed himself in our culture over several decades and became known as a man who was truly devoted to our brand and community,” Vice President of Sales Justin Humphreys said. “We will miss his leadership and dedication, but everyone at Airstream is thrilled to know he will be spending much of his retirement traveling around the United States in a new Airstream travel trailer.”
Schumann started his career at Airstream in 1971 on the production line where he handled everything from fiberglass insulation to rivets in the aluminum, to the final finish area at the end of the production line, which led him to his management role in the Quality Control department in 1990. In 1999, Schumann was promoted to general manager of the Customer Relations Group.
“Airstream is far bigger than any one person. It’s the longevity and knowledge of hundreds of employees who keep the Airstream vision alive,” said Schumann. “Still, I hope I made a difference — that I cared not only for our company, but about our customers and dealers. I hope somebody talks about me down the road. I hope I made a small difference somewhere along the line.”
Schumann plans to spend his retirement still dedicated to Airstream as he travels the country and abroad with his wife, Karyn, and their “Silver Schu”, a 25-foot Flying Cloud, starting with a trip this spring to explore Lake Michigan. Schumann’s last day with Airstream will be Feb. 27.
March, Schumann’s replacement, began his career with Airstream on the production line in 1987. Since that time, March has held several important positions including customer relations manager and factory service manager. Most recently, he served as Airstream’s national service manager for the travel trailer division.
“Rick is uniquely qualified to replace Dave Schumann as GM of parts and service,” Humphreys said. “Rick’s experience with Airstream in both production and service, combined with his most recent role in serving our dealer partners as national service manager, will serve him very well in this new role. Like Dave, Rick, too, owns an Airstream and shares the passion of the many customers he serves.”
