Amazon Chooses Elkhart, Ind., for New Fulfillment Center
Work could go underway almost immediately on two new Amazon buildings that are set to open in 2023 and could create 1,000 new jobs.
The larger of the two – an 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center – will be built on largely vacant land between County Road 17 and County Road 19 on the north side of the Indiana Toll Road.
At the same time, a new 180,000-square-foot delivery station – similar to the one that Amazon operates on the northwest side of South Bend – will be built in the Aeroplex Industrial Park, off of John Weaver Parkway near the Elkhart Municipal Airport.
Officials believe the spot for the multi-story logistics facility, which will make use of robotics, was selected because of its location along the Toll Road and its easy access to major markets in all directions.
And even with labor shortages affecting RV and boat-building manufacturers in the region, officials believe those same transportation links will help Amazon draw workers from throughout the region.
The area already has a net inflow of about 35,000 workers a day and many are driving about 45 minutes each way to get to a job in the county.
