Area Jobless Rate Ticks Above 5%

Unemployment in the Elkhart-Goshen area climbed to 5.2% in July, according to the most recent report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The Elkhart Truth reports that rate compares with 4.4% the previous month and 2.8 percent in July 2022.

An estimated 6,070 workers were looking for jobs last month out of a workforce in the area of 116,257.

Elkhart-Goshen became the latest among Indiana’s 13 metropolitan statistical areas to break above the 5% mark, along with Gary and Kokomo at 5.3% each and Muncie at 5%.

The area in Indiana with the lowest rate was Columbus at 3.2%.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.3%, up from 3.2% the previous month and 3% in July 2022. Unadjusted, the state rate was 4.0 in July, up from 3.7 in June and 3.3 in July 2022.

Local rates are not seasonally adjusted.
