Dustin Tyson has a simple explanation of how he came to add mobile homes and travel trailers to the Riverside inventory: “I woke up one morning in November and said, ‘You know what? I’m going to open up a camper dealership.’”

So that’s what the New Bern, S.C. dealer did, about three weeks ago, loading his triangular lot with travel trailers, fifth-wheels and motorized RVs, the New Bern Sun Journal reports.

Although Tyson, who owns the Riverside empire of Chrylsers, Subarus and Mitsubishis in James City, said he remembered how much he always enjoyed family trips with trailers growing up and realized there were no dealerships in the Craven County area to serve the camping public.

The new dealership is in a neat but unfinished state. Some work needs to be done on the drive and, while he waits to clear more area to display his inventory, the trailers are lined up willy-nilly, side to side and back to back, though in such a way that it’s easy to navigate between them and tour the interiors.

Inside, the showroom is sparse but, Tyson said, it won’t be long before all kinds of camping-related items are on display for sale. Eventually the dealership will be set up to do service and repairs on the RVs and trailers it sells, as well.

He said that, so far, word of mouth is already resulting in good sales.

Among the brands he carries are Heartland, Gulf Stream and Thor Motor Coach.

“The community has just been amazing,” he said. “They’re excited. You make memories here.”
