BigBattery Unveils Lower-Cost Lithium Battery

BigBattery announced its upcoming 12V HUSKY 2e, an optimized, lower-cost 314Ah, 4kWh version of its flagship 12V HUSKY 2 INV lithium battery. The HUSKY 2e will join the HUSKY 2 INV lineup of 12V, 24V and 48V LiFePO4 deep cycle batteries for RVs, camper vans, travel trailers, boats, yachts and off-grid solar power systems that run on an inverter, BigBattery said in a recent release.

BigBattery’s HUSKY 2 INV is a lithium deep cycle battery that stores 5.12kWh in a 12.6 × 18.1 × 9.8-inch, IP65-rated enclosure, with built-in self-heating, a smart battery management system (BMS) and closed-loop communication with supported inverters over CANBus and RS485. All three voltages store the same 5.12kWh: the 12V HUSKY 2 INV holds 400Ah, the 24V HUSKY 2 INV holds 200Ah and the 48V HUSKY 2 INV holds 100Ah.

“We designed HUSKY 2 INV so RV, boat and off-grid solar owners get a complete 12V, 24V or 48V lithium deep cycle battery in one case,” said Eric Lundgren, CEO of BigBattery. “It isn’t the cheapest battery you can buy, and it was never meant to be. Every one ships with self-heating, an IP65 enclosure, inverter communication, app monitoring and a 12-year warranty. HUSKY 2e will soon give more RV, boat and solar system owners a lower-cost entry into the 12V HUSKY 2 platform with the same advanced engineering expected from our products.”

Coming soon: the 12V HUSKY 2e 314Ah lithium battery

The 12V HUSKY 2e is an upcoming 12V 314Ah LiFePO4 battery from BigBattery that stores 4kWh. It is planned as an optimized, lower-cost version of the 12V HUSKY 2 INV, the company said, which stores 400Ah and 5.12kWh, and sits in the 300Ah class of 12V lithium batteries.

bigbattery husky2Built into every HUSKY 2 INV LiFePO4 battery

  • Tier 1 LiFePO4 cells managed by a smart BMS with automatic cell balancing and protection against overcharge, overdischarge, short circuits and temperature extremes
  • Built-in self-heating that warms the cells above 32 F before charging begins, so every model works as a cold weather lithium battery that accepts a charge in ambient temperatures from -4 F to 113 F
  • IP65 / NEMA 4X-rated, vibration-resistant enclosure for road, water and outdoor installs
  • Closed-loop communication with supported inverters over CANBus and RS485, subject to model, voltage and protocol compatibility, so the inverter receives BMS-reported state of charge instead of estimating it from voltage; INV marks it as the inverter battery version of HUSKY 2
  • Bluetooth monitoring in the HUSKY app on iOS and Android, and a built-in LED state-of-charge indicator
  • Up to 16 matching batteries in parallel, for as much as 81.92kWh in one lithium battery bank
  • LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry rated for 4,000 to 6,000-plus cycles at an 80% depth of discharge, a 12-year U.S.-based warranty, lifetime U.S.-based tech support and free end-of-life recycling
  • No electrolyte watering or equalization like flooded lead-acid batteries, and standard M8 terminals for integration into a properly specified electrical system

12V HUSKY 2 INV: a 12V 400Ah LiFePO4 deep cycle battery

BigBattery’s 12V HUSKY 2 INV (12.8V nominal) is a 12-volt lithium battery that stores 400Ah, or 5.12kWh, in a single case. It delivers 250A continuous and 500A peak for three seconds, accepts up to 200A of charge current and ships with a 2AWG cable, mounting brackets and carrying handles, BigBattery said. One 12V 400Ah HUSKY 2 INV matches the rated capacity of four 12V 100Ah lead-acid batteries connected in parallel in one case and can deliver close to double the usable energy of a 400Ah 12V AGM bank, since lead-acid banks are typically discharged only about halfway to protect their life. Sixteen in parallel reach 6,400Ah at 12V.

24V HUSKY 2 INV: a 24V 200Ah lithium battery for larger RV, marine and off-grid systems

BigBattery’s 24V HUSKY 2 INV (25.6V nominal) is a 24-volt lithium battery that stores 200Ah, or 5.12kWh. It delivers 200A continuous and 500A peak for five seconds and accepts up to 150A of charge current. At 24V, a system draws half the current of a 12V system for the same power, which means less voltage drop and heat.

48V HUSKY 2 INV: a 48V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery for 48V inverter systems

BigBattery’s 48V HUSKY 2 INV (51.2V nominal) is a 48-volt lithium battery that stores 100Ah, or 5.12kWh. It delivers 100A continuous and 150A peak for three seconds and accepts up to 100A of charge current. It’s sized for van builds, RVs, marine applications, off-grid cabins and backup power systems built around 48V inverters, the company said.

HUSKY 2 INV as a lithium RV and camper battery

BigBattery’s HUSKY 2 INV is a lithium RV battery for house power in Class A, B and C motorhomes, travel trailers, campers and camper van builds, replacing a lead-acid RV deep cycle battery to run lights, water pumps, fridges and inverter loads, BigBattery said. One 12V 400Ah battery stores 5,120Wh, which BigBattery estimates runs a 200W continuous RV load for about 24 hours; actual runtime depends on appliance draw, inverter efficiency, temperature and other loads, so RV owners should size a bank around measured daily energy use. Switching an RV to lithium means checking the existing wiring, fuses, converter or charger and alternator charging before installation, with charging equipment configured to BigBattery’s LiFePO4 charging parameters. Built-in self-heating warms the battery before charging, so RVs and vans that travel or park in freezing weather can still recharge.
