Commissioners OK Rezoning for Trailer Yard
County officials paved the way for a trailer storage lot over protests from neighbors who fear seeing their paradise torn down.
The Elkhart (Indiana) County Board of Commissioners on Monday voted to rezone land at the corner of U.S. 6 and C.R. 21 at the request of Northern Lakes Investment. The company plans to build a transfer yard for Aluminum Trailer Co. (ATC) on the 18-acre property.
The board’s 2-1 vote was to allow a detailed planned unit development in the agriculturally zoned area. The county Plan Commission had approved it in July on a 6-1 vote.
ATC, which makes commercial trailers as well as toy and utility haulers, will lease the yard exclusively under a long-term contract. The company recently broke ground on a 220,000-square-foot headquarters and plant near Nappanee.
