Could OLED Lighting Finally Find a Home in RVs?
Editor’s Note: OLED – Organic Light-Emitting Diodes – have long been touted as “the next big thing” in lighting, taking the place of LEDs. But adoption has been slow, as LED fixtures continue to improve, and OLEDs still cannot match LEDs in terms of energy efficiency. But as Mark Halper reports in LEDs Magazine, OLEDs and RVs just might be a perfect combination.
“OLED proponents have long struggled to make substantial inroads into the lighting market, but they continue to push, and to identify new segments where the technology could be just right. The latest example: OLEDWorks wants to outfit recreational vehicles – yes, RVs – with the technology’s soft and sleek illumination.
It’s a market that excites the Rochester, N.Y.-based company with growth potential, because as Director of User Experience Kathleen Vaeth noted in a recent blog post, RV sales are on the rise as people rethink their vacations in the era of social distancing and international travel restrictions, and start heading to national parks and the like.
On top of that, thin and flexible OLEDs are simpatico with modern RV interior design which Vaeth noted, has come on in ‘leaps and bounds.’”
