Electric Outdoors Launches Off-Grid Glamping Platform

Electric Outdoors, a Michigan-based startup founded by former THOR Industries Chief Innovation Officer Josef Hjelmaker, has unveiled its EO Canopy, a platform designed to transform off-grid glamping and unlock land that’s been previously unavailable to campers, the company said in a release.

The self-sustaining unit combines renewable energy, water generation, waste management and modern amenities into a single platform. Its solar-tracking roof captures up to 25% more energy than fixed panels, feeding a 154 kWh battery system capable of charging electric vehicles and powering RVs as well as essential appliances. Additionally, the EO Canopy features a recirculating shower, an atmospheric water generator that can produce up to 18 gallons of purified water per day and an incineration toilet for eco-friendly waste disposal.

The all-electric system enables landowners in remote areas to utilize their land for outdoor hospitality without the need for expensive grid or utility infrastructure development. And it offers campers an entirely new approach to glamping off the grid, Electric Outdoors said. With built-in EV charging, 50- and 30-amp RV outlets, internet connectivity, and a comfortable living and sleeping area, the units are designed to be the perfect base camps for RVers, EV drivers and other campers who want a relaxing stay in nature with all the amenities.

“The EO Canopy is about unlocking the outdoors for everyone, everywhere,” said Hjelmaker. “By eliminating the barriers of infrastructure development and permitting, we’re enabling a new era of accessible, sustainable glamping.”

In addition to the indoor-outdoor living space, the platform features innovative technology including an IoT cloud-connected backbone and proprietary app. This summer, Electric Outdoors is deploying several new units in partnership with strategic customers across the U.S. These will be the first EO Canopies available to the public.
