Elkhart County, Ind., officials have given the green light to finalize an incentive package for a $200 million distribution warehouse northeast of Elkhart.
The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners on Monday approved an interlocal agreement as well as a resolution on a tax phase-in for “Project Winnie,” a distribution center planned for the Elkhart East Industrial Park.
Project Winnie would be located to the north of the Indiana Toll Road between County Roads 17 and 19. The warehouse would have a ground floor of around 900,000 square feet and a height of 120 feet, and would employ more than 1,000 people in distribution, management and maintenance.
The project would include utility improvements with sanitary sewer and municipal water through the city of Elkhart, according to Craig Buche, county attorney.
Ken Jones with Jones Petrie Rafinski said in previous reports that the company would invest at least $100 million in real estate and the same amount on the equipment. A few county boards have already approved requests from the developers, which included a tax phase-in and a commitment to repay 80 percent of the company’s costs to extend roads and utilities around the site, using tax increment finance district funds.
“This project has been approved by the Redevelopment Commission and your approval would be the last required approval for this agreement,” Buche told the commissioners. “The project is currently being developed with the highway department’s assistance and Lochemueller Group being the firm developing those plans and specifications.”
