Elkhart County Seeing Dangerous COVID Spike
The Elkhart County Health Department says it’s hoping for the best but expecting the worst after a huge surge in new coronavirus cases.
State health officials have taken notice and may move the county into the “Orange” level. That indicates an increased severity of the virus’ spread.
“It is certainly a spike, and a troubling spike,” said Elkhart County Health Officer Dr. Lydia Mertz.
Dr. Mertz has seen the jump in new coronavirus cases in the county, and doesn’t like what she’s seeing.
“I’ve been talking to people about this spike, I want the public to know that it’s happening. The hospitals are full, and that can be a very dangerous situation.”

She said before Labor Day there were 220 to 250 positive cases a week. A week later, it went up to 300 to 320 cases a week.
“And then that just kept going up 350, 360, around in there. Last week we saw 531 new cases,” Mertz added.
