Indiana’s Elkhart Truth on Wednesday reported that a road running through a new business park in the city will be named after the late Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, who represented the district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
A newly built road in the business park that holds the Amazon warehouse will be named in honor of Jackie Walorski.
Elkhart County plans to name a segment of C.R. 4 in the Elkhart East Industrial Park after the late Republican congresswoman. County leaders say they want to recognize her local contributions.
Walorski died in a headon crash south of Wakarusa on Aug. 3. The accident also killed two members of her staff, Zachary Potts and Emma Thomson, and the Nappanee woman who was driving the other vehicle, Edith Schmucker.
Suzie Weirick, head of the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners, said the idea to name the road for Walorski came from the commissioners’ office.
“It’s not often we get to dedicate a road or rename a road or name a road, and clearly we all think very highly of Jackie Walorski and everything she did for our community and our economic development,” she said. “We want to make sure we honor her as much as we can considering her untimely passing.”
Weirick said they plan to hold an official dedication for Walorski Parkway in spring, after the weather has warmed up and construction activity has died down.
“We’ll have a lovely dedication to really, truly honor her work and how grateful we are for what she did for us,” she said.
The 1,400-acre business park is centered on the Indiana Toll Road and C.R. 17. A $200 million Amazon distribution warehouse is expected to be completed in early 2023.
