Elkhart Truth: Area’s Unemployment Rate Just 2% in September
The unemployment rate in the Elkhart-Goshen metropolitan area remained near historic lows in September, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Monday, as reported by the Elkhart Truth.
The rate last month was 2 percent, matching the benchmark rate in September 2021. That was down from 2.5 percent in August.
Out of a workforce of 118,402, an estimated 2,377 were looking for jobs in September, the report said.
Across Indiana, the unemployment rate was 2.8 percent, down from 3.1 percent one year earlier.
Nationally, the rate in September was 3.5 percent, compared with 4.7 percent the same month last year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Unlike state and national rates, local unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted.
Of the 13 metropolitan statistical areas in Indiana, only two had lower rates than Elkhart-Goshen – Columbus with 1.8 percent and Bloomington with 1.9 percent. The Fort Wayne and Lafayette-West Lafayette areas also recorded rates of 2 percent.
Last winter, the Elkhart-Goshen area led the nation for a time with a rate below 1 percent.
