Grant Would Boost Elkhart Health and Fitness

Elkhart, Ind., will always be known as the RV capital of the world, but some believe it can also carve out a regional reputation for health, wellness, fitness and sports.

With hard work and a lot of money from a Regional Cities grant, plans are in place to make the city with a heart a great place to maintain a healthy heart.

t would all start with the construction of a $32 million community health and wellness center in downtown Elkhart, according to

Elkhart would continue to run with the healthy living theme by building a $29 million sports complex next door. Plans call for six outdoor fields for the likes of lacrosse and soccer and one indoor field that would host both turf and court sports.

The announcements were part of a visit by Gov. Mike Pence, who was touting a Regional Cities plan. Regional Cities grant winners were named last Tuesday in Indianapolis, but Pence wanted to stage a victory celebration on the North Central Region’s home turf – at the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.
