ICE Detention Center Plan Abandoned
A prison management company has canceled plans to build a $100 million ICE detention center in Elkhart County, Ind., according to the Elkhart Truth.
CoreCivic informed county officials of its decision Monday morning. County Commissioner Suzie Weirick said the company contacted them as a courtesy ahead of notifying the county planning office in writing that it was pulling its rezoning request.
The request for a land use amendment for property on C.R. 7 near the Elkhart County Correctional Facility and county landfill would have been the first step in CoreCivic’s plan for a 1,200-bed detention facility for immigrants awaiting deportation. Company representatives said they identified the land in Elkhart County as a prime spot to consolidate detention functions now being served by 30 facilities scattered in the region around Chicago, based on a request for information from the federal government.
