Indiana Rep. Walorski: Aluminum Tariff Could Hurt the RV Industry

Jackie Walorski

President Donald Trump is gearing up for a trade fight on behalf of metal manufacturers.

Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) worries Trump’s plan to level the playing field for American industry – which may include tariffs for imported steel and aluminum – will run flat with RV manufacturers in her state.

“That would really slow the momentum down in what is a booming industry in the RV industry, the boating industry, all the manufacturing all of it that uses both steel and aluminum,” said Walorski.

President Trump wants to help American metal manufacturers compete by charging a tax on imports, as foreign steel and aluminum flood the U.S. market.

Walorski said foreign competition is a problem, but steep charges on importers will mean a rising price in RVs, and potentially fewer sales.

Walorski relayed her concerns to Trump at the Tuesday meeting.

President Trump has until April to decide how to handle any changes to trade policy on imported steel and aluminum.

Legislators who were inside Tuesday’s meeting said they were not given a concrete proposal of how large any potential tariffs could be.
