KOA Franchise VP Honored at National School of Outdoor Hospitality

This week at the George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality, Larry Brownfield, assistant vice president of franchise development for Kampgrounds of America (KOA), was honored for his long-standing contributions as an instructor. After more than a decade of teaching Outdoor Hospitality Management (OHM) and Outdoor Hospitality Professional (OHP) students, Brownfield led his final Operations Management class, marking the conclusion of his tenure at the school.

Terry Munoz, consultant at Campground Consulting Group, OHI Foundation chairman and the lead for OHI’s Certified Pool & Spa Operator Training, thanked Larry for his passion, dedication, mentorship and leadership, noting the significant impact he has had on shaping the National School and supporting the next generation of outdoor hospitality professionals during the opening ceremony.

Brownfield joined National School as an instructor in 2014, after graduating from the program in 2013. His career in outdoor hospitality began in 2005 when he and his wife, Carla, became full-time RVers and Work Campers, traveling across the country from Maine to California. He joined the KOA corporate team in 2008 and has been instrumental in franchise development and new campground construction efforts. In December 2024, Brownfield celebrated the completion of his 100th KOA franchise agreement.

“Larry Brownfield has been more than a colleague to the George O’Leary National School of Outdoor Hospitality — he has been a trusted professional, a generous mentor, and a true friend,” reflected fellow long-time National School instructor Mark Maciha. “His integrity, insight and genuine care for both people and the profession helped shape not only our program, but the culture that defines it. Larry’s contributions will continue to resonate through the countless students and professionals whose paths he influenced.”

Throughout his career, Brownfield has emphasized the importance of education, mentorship and community in outdoor hospitality. As an instructor, he worked to help attendees gain practical insight, confidence, and tools they could immediately apply in their businesses, promoting a professional and supportive network within the industry.

Brownfield holds an Outdoor Hospitality Executive (OHE) designation and has shared his expertise at numerous state, regional, and national industry conferences. His dedication to teaching and mentoring will be remembered by students and fellow instructors alike.
