Lance Camper Details Solutions to Labor Shortage

Lance Camper

Lancaster, Calif.-based Lance Camper has faced a problem common in the RV industry: the lack of qualified labor. In its case, the difficulty is compounded by the fact it is nowhere near the Midwest, where most RV manufacturing is done, and is only on the distant edge of the huge population base of metro-Los Angeles, an hour-and-a-half away.

To help attract, train and retain talent, Lance Camper Human Resources Manager Victor Rivas had to get creative. In addition to traditional recruiting tools like the local press, radio ads and social media, Rivas decided to add some additional tactics, including drive-up job fairs with same-day offers, bulletin boards on the major freeways and on local surface streets, and even large ‘can’t miss’ banners on Lance buildings that have visibility from key streets.

Rivas’ team also partners with Danny Huerta, Lance Camper’s EHS manager, in delivering an onboarding process to welcome, orient and train new recruits. With the guidance of Matt Buckman, vice president and general manager, the team also launched a progressive bonus program, tying in key components to success including attendance, production and quality.

Additionally, in another forward-thinking strategy, Lance retained BrioTix Health to assist with on-site industrial sports medicine services, including training on proper stretching techniques, ergonomic assessments, discomfort and injury evaluation and wellness education.

On top of this, the on-site board-certified athletic trainer will be providing sports-oriented messages, all aimed at keeping staff healthy and happy, both on the job as well as off.

“The entire team is excited about the potential benefit of having the BrioTix program in place and a professional trainer on-site three days a week. It is a very progressive program that no other company in the Antelope Valley offers, giving us a unique differentiator in the very competitive staffing environment we are currently facing,” said Rivas.

Further, Lance also owns Avery Transport, which Rivas assists in recruiting over-the-road driving talent. Recently the team completed an all-new recruiting video shot in-house, highlighting the benefits of working for Avery, which can be viewed here.
