Leading Governors Showcase Growing Outdoor Rec Economy Nationwide

Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) released a new video featuring leading governors from across the United States celebrating the value of the $1.2 trillion outdoor recreation economy and the role of state offices of outdoor recreation. The new video underscores the powerful bipartisan momentum behind outdoor recreation across the nation and is being released as part of the ‘25 in 2025’ campaign, an ambitious initiative to establish the 25th state-level office of outdoor recreation by the end of 2025. The featured governors have already taken bold steps to create and support these offices, and their remarks highlight the importance of outdoor recreation to their states’ economies, public health and community well-being.

“Outdoor recreation is not a partisan issue — it’s an American value,” said Jessica Wahl Turner, president of Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “This video is testament to the visionary leadership of states that have recognized the transformative power of the outdoors by creating offices of outdoor recreation. Through their commitment, we are one step closer to meeting our goal of 25 state outdoor recreation offices by 2025, ensuring that the outdoor economy continues to grow and that more Americans have access to the benefits of time outside.”

Featured governors include:

  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (AR)
  • Governor Katie Hobbs (AZ)
  • Governor Jared Polis (CO)
  • Governor Ned Lamont (CT)
  • Governor Wes Moore (MD)
  • Governor Janet Mills (ME)

ORR will be accepting additional videos from governors in support of the outdoor recreation economy throughout the year.

With more states recognizing the importance of coordinated outdoor recreation policy, the ‘25 in 2025’ campaign has gained significant traction, with nearly 120 outdoor recreation and conservation businesses and organizations supporting the campaign nationwide. Along with today’s video, ORR has produced many resources to support state leaders in creating and supporting offices of outdoor recreation.

The release comes during Great Outdoors Month, a nationwide celebration of outdoor recreation and its impact on millions of Americans. From boosting rural economies to supporting conservation and public land stewardship, outdoor recreation is a vital sector that generates $1.2 trillion in economic output annually and supports 5 million American jobs.
