Man Who Stole $900K from Trailer Firm Gets 4½ Years

Sentencing finally came for a man accused of embezzling nearly $1 million from his employer. The Elkhart Truth was in the courtroom.

An Elkhart, Ind., man has received a 4½-year sentence after he admitted to pocketing $921,000 from an employer who considered him family.

Scott Hagedorn, 56, was sentenced Tuesday to one year in prison followed by six months on home detention and three years on probation. He was accused of stealing sale proceeds over a period of years while working as the Middlebury location manager for John’s Trailer Sales.

A judge handed down the sentence after remarking on the years of trust that Hagedorn violated.

“I preside over many cases involving theft and embezzlement, but none are quite as disturbing as this one,” said Judge Stephen Bowers, Elkhart County Superior Court 2.

John Adams, the owner of John’s Trailer Sales when the thefts occurred, told the court that Hagedorn was like a brother. They knew each other for 20 years; Adams had lent him financial help when he needed it and Hagedorn was part of his son’s wedding.

He pleaded with the judge to make sure Hagedorn’s sentence includes prison time.
