Monthly RV Shipments Fall Back to Earth

RV sales December '22 capped off an amazing three-year run for the industry.

The RV Industry Association’s monthly survey of manufacturers found that there were 20,405 RVs shipped during the month of January, down nearly 62% from the 53,351 units shipped during the gangbuster days of January 2022.

By comparison to this year, in January 2019 – pre-COVID – there 25,540 units shipped. The next year, it wasn’t long into 2020 when factories halted production as news of the global pandemic quickly spread. That very brief period of famine quickly turned to feast, as RVs became the favorite way for people all over the world to still take vacations and be with their families.

January 2023 signals the RV world is officially back on its axis.

“With record high RV production through the first half of 2022, the year-over-year decrease we are seeing in this report was expected,” said RV Industry Association President and CEO Craig Kirby. “We are encouraged by the positive news and high attendance at RV shows across the country and the strong reservation numbers reported by campgrounds.”

Towable RVs, led by conventional travel trailers, ended the month down 66.8% against last January with 16,117 shipments. Motorhomes finished the month down 10.1% compared to the same month last year with 4,288 units.

Park Model RVs finished January up 64.8% compared to the same month last year, with 547 wholesale shipments.
