Preorders Open for ‘Aerodynamic’ Polydrops P21
The following is a report from Auto Evolution.
Earlier this year, we heard that Polydrops was working on their latest unit, the P21. Well, now it’s official; you can get a hold of this crew and place your order for the beautiful on-road living habitat before us. Time to kick back for a moment and get to know the P21.
Folks, Polydrops has been in the news on our website countless times. Heck, ever since 2017, this team has been causing quite a stir with their modern and edgy approach to the camper industry, and until now, the P19 has been carrying the Polydrops torch.
Well, with the arrival of the P21, this North American manufacturer is primed and ready to secure yet another corner of the market, and frankly, they’re doing it in a rather big way. Sure, a lot of our readers are going to lose their cookies when they hear that the P21 is starting at no less than $38,900, but there are countless reasons why this unit is going for such a price tag.
Let’s start with the most obvious: that sharp and questionable exterior. With the unique polygon exterior that Polydrops has developed for its units, this manufacturer is able to distinguish itself from others on the market. There’s also a ton of method to the proverbial madness.
What we’re looking at is nothing more than one of the most aerodynamic machines currently on the market. What you see has been developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), resulting in a unit that not only looks unique but delivers an aerodynamic platform worthy of being used by an EV.
For example, a road test completed with a 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD over 29 miles (47 km) and an elevation change of 1,228 ft at an average speed of 55 mph (88 kph) showed an average energy consumption of 313 Wh per mile. We have that front wedge design, boat tail, and flat underbody to thank for all that.
That body is then set upon an aluminum frame, resulting in a rather lightweight unit considering its size; the P21’s dry weight ranges from 1,800 lbs (816 kg) to 2,000 lbs (907 kg), depending on the options you choose. Add a Timbren axle to smooth out uneven roads, and you’re set to reach some of those hidden places that break away from the tarmac.
