Purem by Eberspaecher Offers Portfolio for Fuel Cell Systems

The Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg covers the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to application. Purem by Eberspaecher is contributing to the development of alternative drive technologies with its broad portfolio of components and systems for optimizing the operation of fuel cells in mobile and stationary applications.

To meet global climate protection targets, alternative approaches and drive technologies are needed — one of these is the use of hydrogen for industry and mobility. Purem by Eberspaecher, a co-developer of new technologies, will exhibit its portfolio of components and systems for the efficient operation of fuel cells at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg from Oct. 21-23 at booth 6F90 in the Carbon Capture Technology Hall B6.

Hydrogen Recirculation Blower Ensures Optimized Conversion

Fuel cells are capable of generating electrical energy through a chemical process involving the supply of hydrogen and oxygen to the so-called stack. To ensure the optimal utilization of hydrogen, Purem by Eberspaecher is developing the Hydrogen Recirculation Blower (HRB). This recirculation blower minimizes hydrogen losses, as only around 80% of the energy source fed into the stack is converted during the chemical process. The HRB ensures the continuous recirculation of hydrogen back into the supply path, which increases fuel utilization. The exhaust technology experts’ in-house development is based on the Eberspaecher VAIREX air recirculation blower and utilizes side channel compressor technology. Purem by Eberspaecher has adapted the existing product to meet the high requirements for impermeableness when used with hydrogen. In order to optimize the alloys and materials used for the alternative energy source, expertise in materials science was incorporated into the development process. Initial practical tests with customers are scheduled to begin at the end of 2025, with production of the HRB planned to commence in 2027.

Modular Exhaust Air System for Fuel Cell Systems

Efficient water management and compliance with applicable noise emission regulations: The Purem by Eberspaecher exhaust air system for fuel cells can be configured from several individual components to form a complete system. The production of water steam is a by-product of the chemical process that generates energy from hydrogen and oxygen. This steam must be removed from the fuel cell system. The exhaust gas specialist’s specially developed water separators are designed for high mass flows by ensuring low back pressure and high separation efficiency. To reduce noise emissions, Purem by Eberspaecher offers silencers that are designed for the intake and exhaust systems of fuel cell vehicles and are resistant to high humidity and water condensation.

Efficient Balance of Plant Components

Purem by Eberspaecher offers production-ready balance of plant components for fuel cell systems based on valve technology from exhaust technology. The Gas Control Valve optimizes the whole system by safely controlling air flow and pressure. This compactly designed component can be used as either a bypass or throttle valve. The Cathode Isolation Valve hermetically seals the cathode path to protect it against leakage, preventing premature aging. The product is designed for a variety of applications thanks to its suitable materials and customer-specific connections.

At the Carbon Capture Technology World Expo, Purem by Eberspaecher will present its portfolio of fuel cell systems and the first module for direct air capture, a method that extracts CO2 directly from the ambient air.
