RV Dealership/Distributor Seeks Tax Abatement
General RV, a national RV distributor based in Elkhart, Ind., is seeking economic incentives from Elkhart County for an RV inspection and distribution center it is planning to build west of Bristol, Ind.
According to a story by Jordan Fouts of the Elkhart Truth, General RV is planning on constructing a $13.4 million facility on 77 acres; it would employ as many as 100 people, include a 112,000-square-foot building and enough lot space to store more than 750 RVs as they await delivery.
The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners approved a zoning change for the property in March, at which time the company laid out the specifics of its plans. According to the Truth, the Elkhart County Council voted 6-1 in favor of the company’s request this past Saturday but will still be taking input from county residents before they take a final vote to approve the request or not.
At that meeting last weekend, Chris Stager, president of the Elkhart County Economic Development Corp., delivered a presentation at which he noted that General RV is a national RV dealership and distributor with 13 locations. RVs from several different makers, including Grand Design RV and Winnebago, will go through inspection at the Bristol facility before they’re shipped off, according to Fouts’ report in the Truth.
In addition to the $13.4 million invested in the land and the building, Stager told the commissioners the company was also putting $782,000 into logistics equipment and $370,000 in IT equipment at the center. The median wage for the approximate 100 employees would be $28.80 an hour.
Stager said the company is requesting a five-year abatement on personal property taxes and seven years for the real estate.
