As Canadians prepare for the Oct. 19 federal election, the RV Dealers Association of Canada highlighted some of its top issues for the country’s RV dealers, providing a breakdown of each of the elective parties’ platforms and tips for how to get involved in the election.
“What we’ve tried to do is to give our members the most information possible so they can make the right choices for their business,” RVDA of Canada President Eleonore Hamm said.
As of Oct. 13, the country’s Conservative, Liberal and New Democratic Parties were in a tight race atop the polls, with support ranging from 23 to 38 percent, followed by the Green Party and Bloc Québécois, according to polling aggregator ThreeHundredEight.
Hamm said that the analysis is meant to highlight each party’s platform from an unbiased perspective and is not intended to endorse any party or candidate.
“The key of our communication has been to ensure our members know what our messaging has been, and we get (our messagine) directly from our members (through an annual member survey),” Hamm said. “We want them to be aware of that, and to give them the most knowledge so they can make the best decision.
Each of the parties appears set on tax reductions in some form or another to small businesses, Hamm said.
“Conservatives are looking at job creation, which is something that would be beneficial for our industry, as well as relief for apprentices as well,” Hamm said.
Conservatives introduced a program last year to allow apprentices to apply for loans and grants from the government.
“(The New Democratic Party) would like to allocate funding to promote tourism, and in their campaign platform they’ve committed an additional $30 million in funds to Destination Canada, to market Canada to foreign and U.S. visitors.”
The Liberal Party, which will also look to cut taxes to small business from 11 to 9 percent, would like to expand the country’s apprentice programs to include a pre-apprentice program to students.
“They want to expand pre-apprenticeship programs, a program that begins in high school, so that people can begin that in grades 11 or 12, and they’re looking to expand that, which would assist us in infrastructure.”
Whatever the outcome of the Oct. 19 election, Hamm is confident that the Association can continue to represent the issues central to Canadian dealers.
“Regardless of which party forms the next government, we’ll definitely be able to carry our messaging forward and continue that dialogue,” she said.
