Alabama’s Birmingham Business Journal (BBJ) recently honored regional C-suite executives for high achievement, including Christina Linton, Storyteller Overland’s chief people officer.

Read the publication’s Q&A with Linton below:

BBJ: What makes you get up and come to work every day?

Linton: Knowing that my efforts contribute to making a difference in the lives of our employees and the success of our organization fuels my motivation. Whether it’s resolving challenges, fostering a sense of belonging or promoting diversity and equity, I am driven by the belief that our work has a positive impact on individuals and the broader community.

What makes the C-suite so important to an organization? The C-suite is instrumental in driving innovation and fostering adaptability within the organization. By encouraging experimentation, embracing change and promoting a growth mindset, they cultivate a culture that thrives on continuous improvement and stays ahead in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

BBJ: What advice do you have for other C-suite leaders on how to navigate a crisis?

Linton: My advice for fellow C-suite leaders on navigating a crisis is rooted in a strategic yet empathetic approach. First and foremost, make a clear and comprehensive plan. Then, diligently execute that plan while remaining flexible enough to adjust as needed. Maintaining a sense of calm, or at least projecting calmness, is crucial in instilling confidence among your team and stakeholders. Drawing from the wisdom of my mentors, I’ve learned the importance of having a well-thought-out plan. This not only ensures a structured response but also allows the leadership team to focus on empathizing with and supporting those affected by the crisis. By prioritizing both strategic action and human connection, leaders can effectively guide their organizations through challenging times.

What is the most pivotal moment or experience of your career thus far? If I were to pinpoint the most pivotal moments in my career, they would undoubtedly revolve around facing significant challenges. Early on, I encountered immense organizational hurdles that truly tested my capabilities. However, it was navigating through these challenges that sculpted me into the executive I am today. While it might sound cliché, I firmly believe in the adage that growth occurs when we’re faced with adversity, not when everything is smooth sailing. These experiences have not only strengthened my skills but also deepened my understanding of effective leadership and resilience in the face of adversity.

BBJ: What helps you succeed in your demanding role?

Linton: What helps me thrive in my demanding role is the deep-seated belief in a purpose larger than myself. This overarching sense of purpose infuses my work with meaning and fuels my determination, especially during the most challenging moments. Additionally, cultivating gratitude for the people and circumstances surrounding me is instrumental in my success. Even on the toughest days, I make a conscious effort to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of others, recognizing that no achievement is accomplished alone. This attitude of gratitude not only fosters a positive work environment but also strengthens relationships and builds resilience in the face of adversity. Ultimately, by anchoring myself in a sense of purpose and gratitude, I find the inspiration and motivation needed to navigate the complexities of my role with clarity and purpose.

BBJ: What is metro Birmingham doing right, and what can it improve upon?

Linton: Birmingham, Alabama, is making significant strides in various areas, demonstrating its potential for further growth and development. Notably, the metro area is successfully attracting new businesses, experiencing the expansion of institutions like UAB, and boasting a robust park system that encourages outdoor activity and community engagement. To sustain and enhance this positive momentum, it’s crucial to focus on a few key areas. Firstly, continuing to prioritize the creation of job opportunities and fostering educational initiatives can play a pivotal role in reducing crime rates and fostering socioeconomic stability within the community. Additionally, implementing infrastructure improvements such as adding bike lanes and enhancing connectivity between different sections of downtown can contribute to creating a more walkable and accessible environment. By addressing these areas of opportunity, Birmingham can further strengthen its position as a vibrant and thriving metropolitan area.
