While the sounds throughout downtown Elkhart this weekend are smooth jazz, the roar of go-karts racing along the streets of the city is now just seven weeks away.

This story by Ken Fox originally appeared in The Elkhart Truth.

Mike Burrell, karting director for the United States Auto Club, which will be the sanctioning body for the race, said this week that the major sponsor has been landed.

Thor Industries of Elkhart will be main sponsor, making the weekend races the Thor Industries Elkhart Riverwalk Grand Prix. The event is set for Aug. 11 – 13.

Elkhart mayor Tim Neese announced in November that go-kart racing will return to the city after a hiatus of over two decades.

The three-day event will be run along the Riverwalk in the city, rather than along Main Street, where the race was held from 1989 to 1995. At its zenith, over 40,000 fans jammed the streets, with a pool of over 600 drivers competing.

But the race was canceled prior to the 1996 installment due in part to liability concerns when a driver filed a lawsuit against the event promoter after being injured in a crash.

Burrell said USAC has hired an events planner for racing weekend, which includes a beer garden and free music concerts Friday and Saturday night, featuring both local bands and a Kiss Resurrection band as the cover on Saturday. But there is one thing Burrell is keeping quiet in regards to a celebrity race that will take place.
