Indianapolis-based Allison Transmission Holdings has announced plans for a new vehicle testing facility at its global headquarters. The manufacturer said the multi-million-dollar facility will be the first of its kind in the Midwest and one of only a few in the U.S.

The Vehicle Environmental Test facility will feature two environmental chambers that can simulate temperature extremes, altitude, and on-road conditions. It will allow testing for regulatory compliance, on-board diagnostic development, and performance improvements for vehicle functional optimization, according to Allison. The company adds the facility will also support testing for various propulsion systems, such as conventional powertrains, alternative fuel, electric hybrid and fully-electric vehicles.
“Industries around the globe depend on Allison Automatics to power highly specialized vehicles that must perform under all kinds of extreme conditions,” said David Graziosi, CEO of Allison Transmission. “The Vehicle Environmental Test facility will provide Allison engineers with enhanced capabilities to conduct testing replicating vehicle environments and duty cycles.”
Project planning for the facility has already begun and construction is expected to be complete in 2020.
