Elkhart County Commissioners have approved an RV transport company lot near Middlebury, Ind.

The property on County Road 2, just west of the LaGrange County line and south of the Indiana/Michigan border, is rezoned from agricultural to manufacturing. Indiana Transport plans to build a lot there for the staging of RVs before their delivery to dealers around the country, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Nearby residents, including those living on or near Stone Lake to the southeast, fought the proposal, saying it will ruin their rural and lake lifestyle. They filled the room at a Jan. 8 public hearing before the county plan commission voted 7-0 to send it to commissioners with a favorable recommendation.

Indiana Transport agreed to:

·         plant evergreen trees around the site to shield neighbors from noise that diesel trucks make.
·         leave standing any trees that are in the setback area between the lot and the property line.
·         meet any restrictions imposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Indiana Department of Environmental Management regarding a waterway that runs through the property.
