Trends: Australian Company Builds Two-Story RV

SLRV Expedition Vehicles in Australia has manufactured the Commander 8×8, a two-story motorhome capable of traversing remote regions of the Outback.

This story by Megan Barber originally appeared in Curbed.

The motorhome is based on the German-built, military-focused Man 8×8 truck chassis and uses a solid lift-up roof design to add a second story.

Downstairs, the motorhome includes a private master bedroom, bathroom, kitchen galley, and a dinette that can seat a family. A king-sized bed also drops down over the lounge to sleep two guests, and the design uses whites and glossy dark cabinets for a sophisticated look.

The customized vehicle includes double ovens, double cooktops, and double fridges.

When the RV arrives at camp, a floating staircase provides access to the upper level, which houses dormitory-style beds for six kids and a pop-up TV. A central aisle lets people navigate through the sleeping quarters and each bed comes with its own reading light.

To generate power, the Commander 8×8 uses a battery pack, solar panel, diesel-operated components, an alternator, and generator.

Each build is custom and uses either a single-story floorplan or the two-story model.
