Velvac to Display New Blind Spot Detection System

Velvac recently announced its new Blind Spot Detection System, capable of providing supplemental awareness to drivers to warn of vehicles and objects in their blind spots. Also on display is Velvac’s 360 Surround View system, which provides one continuous image of the space around the RV for slow speed maneuvering.

Blind Spot Detection and 360 Surround View are two vision safety add-on options to the Road-iQ Platform.

This technology will be on display at Velvac’s Booth #48, in REV’s booth on the American Coach Dream, and on Road-iQ’s Innovation RV parked just outside the Kentucky Expo Center.

Velvac’s blind spot detection system uses the cameras in both the existing passenger and driver side mirrors to detect vehicles and objects in an RV’s blind spot. When an object is detected, an in-glass icon flashes to warn the driver of an oncoming vehicle on the left or right-hand side. To accomplish this, the blind spot video feed is passed through the Road-iQ Video Data Server. If the software detects an object in the cameras’ field of view, it returns a command to activate the mirror icons.

“As prevalent as BSD technology is in passenger vehicles, Velvac understands that the evolution of this technology will naturally meet the needs of RV drivers,” said Paul Hughes, director of RV sales and marketing. “Our camera-based Blind Spot Detection technology will provide drivers with an additional warning while changing lanes to increase their awareness and safety. Because this system utilizes Velvac cameras currently in the mirrors, blind spot detection serves as the next logical step for OEM’s towards increasing driver awareness.”

In addition to Blind Spot Detection, Velvac is also showcasing its 360 Surround View system, which is available as an add-on option to the Road-iQ Platform. 360 Surround View provides drivers a continuous bird’s eye view from the top of their RV, and relays that image to the RV’s monitor.

Designed for slow speed driving and maneuvering, 360 Surround increases driver confidence and awareness of objects that would otherwise be out of view. At the center of Blind Spot Detection and 360 Surround View is Road-iQ, an all-in-one vehicle vision technology platform.

This system acts as the primary tool to enhance a driver’s vision by relaying and recording real-time video from up to seven cameras to a driver’s dash-mounted monitor or iPad. In addition to these offerings, Road-iQ allows for easy add-on options such as: remote live viewing, comfort controls, Wi-Fi hotspot, and recording.
