40 Under 40: Dave Thomas
Product Support, Hughes Autoformers; With company: 5 years | Industry experience: 7 years

Dave Thomas has the unique ability to inspire his team, mentor emerging leaders and make data-informed decisions that align with long-term organizational goals, all of which have been on display since he came on board just as the Hughes Autoformers Watchdog line of products was expanding to Generation II.
Working in product support, he has learned the intricacies of all RV electrical/electronic systems and how they interact with the Watchdog. If there’s a change to any phone operating system, he’s aware of it and makes the needed changes in minutes. This involves a worldwide network for both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
“Dave has spent countless hours testing and problem-solving to help create an industry-leading product,” a peer says. “He is always willing to share his knowledge and has made an incredible impact with his problem-solving skills to better our day to day.”
Bringing new technologies to the power protection market always requires an extra effort, and introducing Wi-Fi to the RVing public was going to be a whole new set of challenges. “Dave stepped up and took control of the situation,” the peer adds. “He listens to the customers, conveys their concerns to the engineering team and develops solutions that the customer can use. All questions above a certain level are channeled to him.”
He’s also “fascinated” by the entire RV industry, and visits dealerships, campgrounds and attends various industry shows. “Dave has the thanks and admiration of the entire Hughes team,” another peer states.
Outside of his career, Dave enjoys photography, explores the deserts of Nevada and the canyons of southern Utah, guitar playing and building guitar amplifiers.
What advice do you have for up-and-coming leaders in the RV industry?
A little empathy can go a long way, with your team, and with your customers. Integrity and courtesy are what establish long-lasting relations between a company and their customers. Set the example and create an experience for your customers, and for your team. Show gratitude at any given opportunity. A team with a high-shared morale can accomplish just about anything, and it carries further to anyone that the team may interact with.
What does it mean to be a 40 Under 40 honoree?
To be on honoree with the amount of experience I have means that I am doing things the right way, and being recognized for my passion. I hope that it inspires others in the industry to take their teams and their customer service to the same level, or beyond.
