RVDA Con/Expo To Spotlight Dealer Pricing, FTC Guidance

Crowell AdamAdam

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is increasing its focus on dealership pricing and advertising practices, including how dealers advertise vehicle prices, mandatory fees, rebates and discounts.

An education session at the upcoming RV Dealers Convention/Expo in Las Vegas, presented by Adam Crowell, chief legal and strategy officer at KPA, will help RV dealers understand recent FTC guidance, state advertising requirements and steps dealerships can take to reduce compliance risk.

“The FTC and State Crackdowns on Advertising,” presented at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Versailles 1 room as part of the Digital Marketing track, will examine current federal and state enforcement priorities and how regulators are scrutinizing dealership websites, inventory listings, social media and other advertising.

The session comes as the FTC has increased its focus on automobile pricing transparency. Recent FTC guidance addresses how dealers advertise vehicle prices, mandatory fees such as document and processing fees, conditional rebates and discounts, optional products, and prices displayed on dealer and third-party websites.

For RV dealers, these developments make it increasingly important to review how prices and promotions are presented across digital and traditional advertising. Dealers will learn how to market competitively while complying with federal and state advertising requirements, what “clear and conspicuous” means in today’s regulatory environment, and practical steps they can take to reduce enforcement risk.

Learning objectives for this session include:

  • Identify pricing practices, fee disclosures and advertising terms that are drawing regulatory scrutiny.
  • Audit digital and print marketing materials for compliance with current FTC guidance and state consumer protection requirements.
  • Understand how mandatory fees, rebates, discounts and other pricing information should be presented in dealership advertising.
  • Implement a standardized review and approval process for sales and F&I promotions to reduce the risk of deceptive advertising or bait-and-switch allegations.

The Convention/Expo will take place Nov. 9-13 at Paris Las Vegas and is sponsored by RVDA of U.S., RVDA of Canada and the Mike Molino RV Learning Center.
