Transport Canada Approves Three-Year Renewal of RV Industry ELD Exemption
The Canadian RV Association (CRVA) announced that Transport Canada has officially approved a three-year renewal of the Driveaway-Towaway Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Exemption, originally granted on Oct. 19, 2023.
This important decision provides continued flexibility for transportation companies delivering recreational vehicles from manufacturers to dealerships across Canada and from the United States, CRVA said.
The exemption allows eligible carriers transporting motorhomes and towing recreational vehicle trailers to operate without the mandatory use of electronic logging devices, provided they comply with the terms and conditions of the exemption and applicable Hours of Service regulations.
The renewal is particularly important to CRVA manufacturers, dealers and their transportation partners, helping to reduce transportation challenges, improve delivery efficiencies, and support the movement of recreational vehicles across the Canada–U.S. border.
A Collaborative Industry Effort
CRVA said it would like to sincerely thank the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association of Canada (RVDA of Canada) and the RV Industry Association (RVIA) for their continued partnership and collaborative efforts throughout the renewal process.
“We also extend our appreciation to the many transportation companies that participated in our industry survey and provided the operational and safety information necessary to support our renewal application.
“A special thank you to Transport Canada for working closely with our industry throughout this process and recognizing the unique challenges faced by RV transportation companies while maintaining its commitment to Canadian road safety,” CRVA said.

- Notification: Submit a new Notice of Intention to Transport Canada before operating under the renewed exemption.
- Driver Records: Maintain required driver information, licence records, annual driver abstracts, and records of duty status.
- Compliance and Safety: Monitor driver compliance, review and document collisions, and maintain the required records.
- Annual Reporting: Submit a monitoring report to Transport Canada within 12 months of commencing operations under the exemption and annually thereafter.

CRVA said it will continue working closely with Transport Canada and industry partners to support safe, efficient and reliable RV transportation throughout Canada.
