Industry Businesses Participate in Elkhart Habitat for Humanity Construction
The following report is from The Elkhart Truth.
Sixty to 70 volunteers turned out Thursday to lend their hammering skills and other support to “Raise the Roof” for Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County.
Local businesses, volunteers and community members participated in a special panel build event as part of the organization’s annual Raise the Roof initiative at the Northern Indiana Event Center.
The event featured teams of five to 10 members from leading local organizations – including Dave Carter & Associates, Forest River, Genesis Products, Interra Credit Union, Lippert, Patrick Industries, Wieland Designs and Winnebago Industries – working side by side to construct the wall panels for two future Habitat homes.
As part of the initiative, the teams also engaged in a friendly competition to raise funds by selling individual studs, which will be decorated and incorporated into the homes — symbolizing the community’s direct investment in building strength, stability and hope for local families.

This year’s Raise the Roof initiative is dedicated to building safe, affordable homes for the Carmona and Portillo families. Through the collective efforts of sponsors, volunteers and donors, these families are one step closer to achieving their dream of a stable home where their children can grow, thrive and build a brighter future, organizers said.
Members of the Carmona and Portillo families were among those wielding hammers and hauling panels, getting their first taste of “sweat equity” as required by the program.
The panel build offers a hands-on opportunity for the community to directly help address the need for affordable housing in Elkhart County. By assembling the walls in advance, volunteers help accelerate the construction process while fostering a spirit of unity and purpose.
“Raise the Roof is a powerful reminder that when a community comes together with purpose, we can create lasting impact,” said Kristin Hall, director of Development & Engagement for Habitat of Humanity. “Every panel built and every stud sponsored represents more than construction materials – it reflects a shared commitment to the Carmona and Portillo families, and to building a stronger, more stable future right here in Elkhart County.”
Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, having built 246 homes locally, with nine more under construction. Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County has worked to eliminate substandard housing by building and rehabilitating homes, advocating for fair housing policies, and empowering families through education and resources.
