Napa Valley Register Highlights RVing
In a recent Napa Valley Register article, Dan Evans recounts an RVing trip he, his girlfriend and her daughter took through Arizona, including the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. The following is an excerpt:
On a random Saturday a few weeks back, I found myself piloting a 34-foot recreational vehicle on I-17 north, white knuckling my way through mid-afternoon Arizona traffic.
Earlier this year, my girlfriend asked me to join her and her daughter on a trip that would take us to Flagstaff, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Las Vegas. The motorhome was to be picked up and dropped off (preferably in the same condition) in Phoenix. Among her many hats, Theresa is a travel writer, and the trip had been arranged by RVShare.com as part of that work.
Friends, I normally drive a Mini convertible, a decidedly impractical vehicle more attuned to my post-divorce bachelor period in South Florida than my current circumstances. Still, the urge to drive a massive vehicle, though mostly dormant in my DNA, is not entirely absent. And so the adventure began.
[…]We drive to the park entrance, discovering (to my great relief) vehicles are largely prohibited from entering Zion. I find an area where RVs are allowed to park, and after 17 back-and-forth attempts (but who’s counting), I successfully parallel park the motorhome. After my heart rate returns to normal, we head into the park.
It is astonishing.
The cliffs rose above us in bands of red, cream and rust, their faces carved and streaked in ways that made the whole canyon feel alive. The scale was overwhelming, but not in the distant, postcard way of the Grand Canyon. The rock walls, though close enough to touch, seem too immense to comprehend.
