Rescue-Ranger has been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,723,533 B1 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for technology incorporated in its DEF head sensor simulator products. The patent, granted Sept. 1, recognizes Rescue-Ranger technology developed to address a potentially serious problem for diesel-powered motorhome owners: failure of the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) head sensor system.
A DEF head sensor failure can generate engine fault codes and, under applicable engine-control strategies, may lead to progressive engine derating. For diesel pusher owners traveling far from home, the result can be an interrupted trip, towing, extended service delays and significant unexpected expense, Rescue-Ranger said in a recent release.
Rescue-Ranger DEF Head Sensor Simulators are designed as emergency tools for qualifying DEF head sensor failures. The system provides simulated DEF sensor information to the vehicle’s electronic control system, helping address the immediate consequences of certain sensor failures while the owner arranges for proper diagnosis and repair.
“Receiving a U.S. patent is important validation of the innovation behind Rescue-Ranger,” said John Getter of Rescue-Ranger. “Our goal has always been to give diesel motorhome owners a practical tool they can have onboard in case a DEF head sensor failure threatens to interrupt their trip.”
The patent strengthens Rescue-Ranger’s intellectual property position as the company expands its presence in the RV and diesel vehicle markets, the company said. Rescue-Ranger is seeking opportunities to work with motorhome manufacturers, RV dealers, diesel service facilities and parts distributors interested in offering the technology to their customers.
“Most owners hope they never need it,” Getter said. “But when a DEF head sensor fails hundreds of miles from home, having the right equipment onboard can make an enormous difference. We believe Rescue-Ranger should be considered part of the emergency equipment installed aboard a diesel pusher motorhome.”
Based in Stillwater, Minnesota, Rescue-Ranger develops and produces DEF Head Sensor Simulator products for diesel-powered motorhomes and other vehicles. Rescue-Ranger products are intended for appropriate emergency DEF sensor failure situations and are not substitutes for required emissions-system diagnosis, repair or maintenance.
