If climbing air fares and spiking gas prices stick around, which many analysts expect, what will that mean for your summer vacation? Maybe a detour to a different style of lodging.
The website RVShare — basically uber for RV’s — says interest in renting recreational vehicles is rising. This seemed counterintuitive to us, at first. Wouldn’t a road trip in a big vehicle when gas prices are high drive up the cost of a road trip? But when you compare the cost of renting an RV versus the cost of a hotel (which the RV would replace), the math might actually work out… even if the RV might guzzle more gas than your car.
“With gas prices the way they’re spiking right now, it’s only adding about $30 to your trip,” said RVShare’s Fiorella Yriberry. “Usually, road trips are within 300 miles. That’s what they average and that comes down to about $30 more to your cost.”
We also asked Yriberry about some of the nitty gritty of renting a recreational vehicle, like insurance and if you need a special license to drive a motor home.
“You don’t need a special license to rent an RV,” she said. “And insurance, we handle all of that through the process of booking.”
Say you don’t want to drive. RVShare says you can rent a motor home that’s parked at a campground. You leave it parked and just use it like a hotel. Maybe it’s something to consider for your summer vacation to offset higher fuel costs.
Side note: RV share says it’s ramping up for the World Cup. And it expects many fans who will attend matches at Levi’s Stadium to stay in rented RV’s around the San Francisco Bay Area instead of hotels.
