Kampgrounds of America (KOA) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of New Orleans KOA Holiday. Owners Michael and Deborah Dunn will commemorate the milestone with a community celebration on Sept. 25 honoring the campground’s rich history while paying tribute to acclaimed New Orleans jazz musician Kermit Ruffins through the dedication of the campground’s first artist-inspired lodge.
The free public celebration will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, second line parade, live performance by Ruffins and his band, food and drinks, and the official dedication of the campground’s lodge in his honor, KOA said. As part of a new tradition, New Orleans KOA Holiday plans to dedicate each of its lodges to notable local artists whose work reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage. The celebration will also include the naming of the street leading to the lodge in recognition of Ruffins and his family.
Located in River Ridge just minutes from the French Quarter, New Orleans KOA Holiday has served as a gateway to one of America’s most beloved destinations since 1976, KOA said. Over the past 50 years, the campground has welcomed generations of travelers exploring New Orleans’ renowned music, cuisine, festivals and culture while providing a convenient home base for RVers, cabin guests and tent campers.
“This anniversary isn’t just about looking back at 50 incredible years,” said Deborah Dunn, owner of New Orleans KOA Holiday. “It’s about celebrating the community, culture and people that have made this campground such a special place. There is no better way to mark this milestone than by honoring Kermit Ruffins, whose music and spirit represent the very best of New Orleans.”
Known internationally as one of New Orleans’ premier jazz performers, Ruffins has spent decades preserving and sharing the city’s musical traditions. His performances have become synonymous with the city’s vibrant culture, making him a fitting choice for the campground’s first lodge dedication.
The celebration begins at noon and is free and open to the public. Festivities include:

Campgrounds like New Orleans KOA Holiday have a significant economic and cultural impact on local communities. According to KOA’s annual Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, campers injected $66 billion into local economies in 2025, with the average camper spending more than $200 daily while camping. Campers are looking to experience the history and culture of local regions, 33% say they are interested in visiting small towns, and another 38% are drawn to historic sites, KOA said.
